Ecuador Readies for OPEC Meeting

Quito, Apr 6 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador is preparing to host the 4th Meeting of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Research and Development executives, starting Tuesday.

The official release says Ecuadorian Mining and Oil Minister Derlis Palacios will open the 48-hour meeting that will address cooperation, research and development of the oil sector.

The working tables beginning Tuesday will discuss oil extraction and processing technology and future OPEC plans, policies and regulations, plus cooperation on carbon gas emission, greenhouse effect and heavy oils. On Wednesday, the participants will take a field trip to an oilfield in the Amazonia region.

Participants include Hasan Qabazard, director of the OPEC Research Division, Mohamed Hamel, head of the cartel's Energy Research Department, and Fuad Siala, Senior analyst of Alternative Energy Sources and specialists from the member countries.

Oil is Ecuador's top export item, and it quit the OPEC in 1992 and returned in 2007.
