Opposition Heats up Campaign in Ecuador

Quito, Mar 27 (Prensa Latina) Electoral activity has intensified in Ecuador, with fuel added by violent actions by the opposition.

The scramble for votes is focused in Guayaquil, the cradle of SocialChristians, with followers of Mayor Jaime Nebot, who is seeking re-election, attacking members of Alianza Pais (AP), the party led by President Rafael Correa.

Former Minister and AP candidate to the Guayaquil Mayoralship, Maria de los Angeles Duarte, denounced that employees and policemen beat members of her movement yesterday, when they were conducting a campaign in the Bastion Popular area.

Television channels showed images of several people, some of them wearing plain clothes and carrying sticks and clubs, getting off a Metropolitan Police van to attack AP followers, who were pinning posters of their candidate.

Municipal employees snatched the posters from their hands and attacked the members of Alianza Pais, said Duarte, who urged Nebot to adopt measures against his employees. This is the second such action registered in Guayaquil, the country's most populated city (more than two million inhabitants). A few weeks ago the metropolitan police beat other AP activists, who were painting propaganda in a wall in their area.
