Ecuador´s Correa: Dolarization Stays

Quito, Mar 26 (Prensa Latina) Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa warned that people propagating rumors about the introduction of a new currency instead of the US dollar will be jailed.

"I am not going to allow some people to play with citizens" good faith and the country"s stability," Correa told reporters at the Carondelet Presidential Palace after denying reports of a cabinet plan to change from the US dollar.

The President held the opposition responsible for spreading the rumors, whose aim, he said, is to affect the government in the upcoming April 26 general elections.

“It is another vile calumny by eternal opponents who hope to win a few votes in the next elections," he said.

The head of State threatened to jail those "irresponsible people" for spreading news that has already created uncertainty in some of the country"s coastal territories.

Ecuador introduced the dollar as its currency a decade ago amid a financial crisis that caused almost two dozen banks to collapse.

According to Correa, Ecuador will be able to weather the global economic crisis without resorting to a change in the currency.
