Report: Correa Threatens to Expel America Movil

Cellular-News, 12 September, 2007

Ecuador's Rafael Correa has asked Mexican mobile holding firm America Movil to pay overdue taxes by December or leave the country, Spanish business news site Cinco Dias reported.

Correa said billionaire Carlos Slim's operator has declared losses and has not paid taxes for the last five years, the report said.

"The party is over," Correa said.

Correa told the public that America Movil pays less in taxes than its competitor Movistar, a company that is also due to renegotiate its contract, even though Movistar has a third of the number of clients as America Movil, the report said.
