QUITO, Ecuador — Ecuador signed an agreement Thursday to acquire a 5 percent share of Venezuelan TV network Telesur.
The two-year-old, Caracas-based station, which is supported by the Venezuelan government, has similar agreements with left-leaning governments in other Latin American nations: Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba, Bolivia and Nicaragua.
The deal will allow the network to broadcast in Ecuador, whose President Rafael Correa is an ally of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Telesur did disclose financial terms of the deal.
Chavez, a frequent critic of Washington, touts Telesur as an alternative to what he calls the U.S.-friendly coverage of other large media outlets.
