Ecuador Attorney General Resigns

Quito, Jan 31 (Prensa Latina) Francisco Cucalon, appointed attorney general of Ecuador by Partido Renovador Institucional (Prian), resigned due to the impossibility of assuming office.

Cucalon went to Congress after learning that Prian -that proposed him barely 13 days ago- retired its support and backs his demotion.

The Prian resolution was to be voted in Congress but his resignation makes the procedure unnecessary and allows the National Judiciary Council to submit new candidates.

President Rafael Correa, his cabinet, court staffs and the population labeled his appointment unconstitutional.

Cucalon has been charged with favoring drug traffickers as pro tempore attorney general in 1997 but was never indicted to increase the rejection.

Congressional sessions ran Wednesday under extreme security due to protests outside the building urging for a referendum.
