Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa reiterated that a conspiracy to destabilize his country, funded by the rightwing factions in the United States, has been uncovered.
“Since they know they cannot beat us at the polls and that if tomorrow we were to hold an election we would win again in the first round...they are trying to confuse the military and police to turn them against the government,” said Correa during a televised broadcast.
Correa said that certain sectors of the Ecuadorian Armed Forces under the sway of former president and Colonel Lucio Gutierrez are implicated in the conspiracy which he called “Honduran style.”
Lucio Gutierrez’ brother Gilmar Gutiérrez is also implicated in the conspiracy. Gilmar is a former Army Capitan and holds a seat in the National Assembly and together with his brother heads the Sociedad Patriótica Party.
Correa revealed an email circulating among military personnel that claims the government is going to eliminate the Institute of Social Security of the Armed Forces (ISSFA) and remove military personnel from the Army’s Polytechnic School (ESPE).
Correa said that they are manipulating what the constitution really states and that in reality military personnel and police are going to be benefitted with better retirement salaries. He added that in no the ISSFA is not being dissolved and called the claim an “absolute lie.”
