Ecuador for Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy

Quito, Feb 5 (Prensa Latina) Ecuadorian Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Alecksey Mosquera expressed interest in strengthening cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to boost civilian projects in that field.

During a meeting with IAEI representative Raul Ramirez, who is on a visit to Ecuador, Mosquera favored exploring new collaboration opportunities with that agency.

He also expressed interest in installing a multipurpose irradiator in Ecuador to treat food and crops for domestic consumption and export.

Ecuador wants to join the majority of countries that are members of the IAEA and have installed nuclear technologies to use them peacefully in their development projects, Mosquera pointed out.

For his part, Ramirez noted the need for Ecuador to pass a Radiological Protection Control Act and rules to monitor the development of nuclear applications.

The IAEA plans to invest 866,000 dollar to provide technical assistance, technological transfer, equipment and professional training to Ecuador.
