Ecuador: Social Sector Progressing

Quito, Dec 29 (Prensa Latina) The Ecuadorian government announced its firm commitment in support to the social sector, with an increase in investment in a 156 percent in relation to 2004.

The contribution to the most vulnerable sectors this year increased in little more than 2, 608 million dollars, with respect to four years ago, when only 1,420 millions were destined for such sectors, a note published by the web site of the Presidency of the Republic reports.

The investment made in 2007, in the first 12 months of the administration of President Rafael Correa, amounted to 2, 864 million dollars and an increase of 1,420 million was registered during 2008, which confirms the priority granted by the government to this area.

The budget destined to health care grew in a 329 percent, in comparison to the 428 million dollars in 2004 by the government of the governor Lucio Gutierrez.

In education, there was an increase of the cost in a 58 percent with respect to four years ago, which favored the improvement of the facilities of public education and quality in learning.

These numbers demonstrate the special attention granted by government to the social area, including besides the implementation of programs destined to generate new job opportunities and economic inclusion.
