Medics have confirmed that over 660 Palestinians have so far been killed by Israeli forces in the holiday season, 215 of whom are children and 98 are women. |
The legislative commission in Ecuador called for an international investigation on Tuesday, saying that the world must "pursue those responsible for these crimes against humanity".
The commission, which will perform the duties of the Congress until the next general election in April and until a new Constitution is adopted, announced that it had passed a resolution to call for an immediate ceasefire and show Ecuador's solidarity with the Palestinian people.
"The world is horrified by the Israeli military offensive against the Palestinian people," it said on the 11th day of sustained gunship fire and airstrikes on the densely populated Palestinian territory.
"A large number of the victims are women and children, which raises the issue of state-sponsored terrorism and (constitutes) a crime against humanity," the resolution said.
Earlier, the United Nations warned that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is "increasingly alarming" and demanded an end to the Israeli violence.
The warning comes as Israeli strikes on three UN-run schools on Tuesday killed at least 48 people and pushed the Palestinian death toll above 660. The Israeli offensive into Gaza has led to the death of at least 215 children and 98 women.
The recent Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the latest of a series which began when world powers created Israel in 1948 under the Zionist slogan of a 'land without a people and a people without a land'.
The establishment of Israel in the Middle East was carried out in compensation for the hardships and suffering imposed on the Jews of Europe due to anti-Semitism in the continent.
Zionists benefited by gaining power over the native land of the Palestinians, but the establishment and the subsequent terror attacks against the Palestinian population gave rise to the philosophy of resistance and in recent years armed retaliation.
According to Tel Aviv, however, the war on Gaza is aimed at ending rocket attacks against Israeli settlers, toppling Hamas and preventing the resistance group from rearming.
Hamas, on the other hand, demands a cessation of Israeli attacks and the opening of the Gaza border -- which has been closed due to the 18-month blockade imposed on the strip by Tel Aviv.
