Ecuadorian president calls for unity after constitutional referendum

QUITO, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa made a unity call Sunday after exit polls showed that the nation approved a new constitution with a majority.

"I make a unity call to the Ecuadorians and I congratulate the Ecuadorian people who said "yes" to the new constitution during the election day," Correa said in his coastal hometown of Cuayaqil.

"Not a step back, never again to go back, only to look at the future. Together we must move forward for future changes," Correa said.

He invited the opposition to jointly make the changes and share a proud and sovereign homeland.

"We respect the people from the opposition, who for conviction had different postures to the government, but now we must put together the hands and the hearts to make the country move forward," Correa said.

According to exit polls released by Santiago & Perez polling firm, some 66.4 percent people voted "yes" for the new constitution.
