Ecuadorean President: Zero Illiteracy by 2009

Quito, Oct 31 (Prensa Latina) Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa announced on Wednesday the government´s intention to wipe out illiteracy by 2009, in the year that marks the bicentennial of the First Cry of Independence.

Leading a gathering at Independence Square, on occasion of Ecuador's Coat of Arms Day, Correa stressed the interest to declare the nation free from illiteracy within two years.

He noted that high school graduates involved in this educational task have the enormous responsibility to "step up the educational revolution demanded by the people."

He announced that a wage policy oriented to the best teachers' performance is being devised, as they should earn better salaries."
