Ecuador Chief Justice Earns too Much

Quito, May 31 (Prensa Latina) Chief Justice Jaime Velasco of Ecuador s Supreme Court (CSJ) was accused of fraud Thursday, for having received 27,954 dollars in only two months in 2006.

Deputy Jimmy Jairada denounced Velasco s benefits and mega-wage in November and December, far more than that of President Rafael Correa, who earns 3,000 dollars monthly.

The legislator accused Velasco of fraud because Social Security has been paying him a retirement pension since May 2005, while he also receives a seniority benefit.

Jairada urged Attorney General Jorge German to open an investigation into these payments, to verify if it is legal for him to get a seniority subsidy.
