Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa on Wednesday declared a state of emergency for the country's rail system, to allow immediate investment to facilitate its restoration.
Correa announced the decision at a public celebration held by the rail workers' union to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of Ecuador's railroads. Correa has been demanding a speedy rehabilitation of Ecuador's transport system, which has been paralyzed by a lack of investment.
Correa hoped that the Duran-Huigra service will be repaired within three months.
The project will repair 965 km of railroad and refurbish Quito's Chimbacalle station, whose name would be changed to Eloy Alfaro.
