Ecuador Takes Colombia Spray to OAS

Quito, Jan 8 (Prensa Latina) Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Francisco Carrion is flying to Washington Monday to denounce before the Organization of American States (OAS) aerial glyphosate fumigations by Colombia along the common border.

President Alfredo Palacio announced the visit, noting that Carrion is meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday with representatives of the OAS and other international bodies to denounce the case.

Palacio condemned Bogota s resumption of glyphosate spraying along a 10-kilometer buffer zone fifteen days earlier and once more urged his neighbor to undertake a scientific study of that toxin s effects on legal crops and humans.

Colombia uses glyphosate to eliminate coca plantations but Ecuadorian authorities assure the herbicide also destroys other crops and affects humans and animals.
