Ecuador Prez Calls for Referendum

Quito, Jan 15 (Prensa Latina) Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa called for a referendum Monday to ask the people to establish a National Constituent Assembly with full powers.

According to the decree signed by Correa, the referendum will take place on March 18 and the ballot will have to include the statutes of the Constituent Assembly.

The referendum will have an only one question, do you agree with the call and establishment of a National Constituent Assembly to draw-up a new Constitution?

The document will be sent to the Supreme Electoral Court, which will be in charge of organizing and carrying out the process. Similarly, they will send a copy to Congress for its information.

Minutes after the announcement from the city known as Mitad del Mundo (Half of the World), the newly inaugurated dignitary told the crowd that he is thus beginning to fulfill his promises, and stated that legislators would only receive a copy of the decree.

From the moment of the decree s signing, the Supreme Electoral Court began to organize and develop the referendum, he emphasized.
