The Patriotic Society Party has done an about-turn in the Congress: their 24 legislators will now join the legislators of the PRE (6 deputies), Democratic Left (7 deputies), RED (5 Deputies), MPD (3 deputies), Socialist Party (1 deputy), Pachakutik (6 deputies), Regional Alliance for Equity (1 deputy) and New Country (1 deputy); forming a new majority of 54 legislators.
The minority is now made up of the 46 votes of representatives from PRIAN, PSC and UDC. This new majority has smoothed the way for the President-elect to send to the Congress his Popular Consultation and to make its passage an urgent priority.
In addition, it is understood that this new majority will wait for the inauguration of the new head of state before setting up the 18 permanent specialised commissions. It can't be ruled out that the UDC may also join the majority at the last minute.
The legislators forming the minority were surprised by the decision of Patriotic Society, while unofficially they have suggested that it is related to the election of the Contralor, and that someone from Lucio Gutiérrez's party would now likely be selected for that office.
